We Finished a Semester?
Who would have thought we’d be here? Not me... Not me...
For real though, I absolutely could not have predicated we would be here right now. Before coming to campus, I was looking at the COVID-19 numbers per county in Ohio and I assumed we would be leaving for online classes a week after we got here. I had no faith we would survive more than a couple weeks. To my surprise, we finished an entire semester!
I am really grateful we finished an entire semester in person. I was able to regain confidence as a singer, actor and dancer through my training as a musical theater major. I didn’t think I would be able to learn anything in my Shakespeare class with a mask on with everyone six feet apart, but I ended up learning so much! The same applies to every class I’ve had this semester. I learned a lot in my dance classes this semester! At the end of the semester one of my teachers told our class how proud she was for how quickly we were able to pick up on combinations by the end of the semester. I came into my senior year very self conscious because quarantine was the longest time I had gone without performing.
I could quite literally tear up thinking about how happy I am to have completed a semester in person. The only difference between this semester and every other semester was the fact we have to wear masks in all of our classes. Most of my friends in college are experiencing some type of online environment this semester. Either they started off fully online, or they were moved there by the end of the semester.
Throughout my four years at Ohio Northern University, I often joked about Ada being in the middle of a cornfield and being so secluded from the rest of the outside world. However, during my senior year I couldn't have been more grateful for this aspect of ONU.
The state of Ohio is currently looking at a second possible shutdown. I am nervous as to what this can mean for my final semester on campus. I was looking forward to possibly being able to perform in person again next semester with the spring musical, but I just want this next semester to prepare me for the real world as much as this semester has.
Let me know if you feel the same!
